How to Calculate Fat Content

The fat content of any food is easy to calculate if you know the total calories and fat content in grams. In scientific terms, calorie is an unit of measurement of the amount of heat it takes to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water by 1 degree Celsius.

Each gram of fat contains about 9 calories. Each gram of protein and carbohydrate contains about 4 calories. On a hot dog package, the label may say that each frank has 170 calories, from 7 grams of protein, 1 gram of carbohydrate, and 15 grams of fat.

Multiply 15 grams of fat by 9 (calories per gram of fat). The result shows that 135 calories come from fat.

Then divide total calories, which is 170, into fat calories, which is 135. The result is 0.79.

Multiply by 100. The answer reveals that 79 percent of the calories in the frank come from fat.
