That’s why we were thrilled to catch wind of a new study from the University of Minnesota which suggests we can buy our willpower in pill form! Woo-hoo! This is the best news evah!
Check it out: After 27 compulsive gamblers were given an amino acid supplement - about 1,200 milligrams of N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) - daily for eight weeks, more than half of them reported a reduction in the urge to splurge. Why did this happen? As with most good science, no one really knows, but it may be because NAC boosts levels of glutamate, a hotwire in your body that buddies up with the sensations of motivation and reward.
While the inner-workings of this may be truly fascinating, perhaps your health plans for 2008 (sticking to a workout plan, kicking that ciggie habit, etc) may trump your need to know all the intricacies, perhaps? We thought so.
