Wisdom Teeth Problems

If you are facing an intolerable pain in your mouth, chances are your wisdom tooth is on it’s way out.

You will probably be unable to eat, drink or even open your mouth. You may be wondering why the wisdom teeth cause such problems. Read on to find out what can you do to ease the pain.

Crooked Wisdom?

You will get your wisdom teeth when you are anywhere between 18 to 21 years of age.

Getting crooked wisdom teeth is the most common problem you would face. The main reason for this problem your narrow jaw line.

Dr. Mane, dentist from Dr. Mane’s Clinic, Mumbai, says, earlier, we used to have very hard to chew food like raw meat and so people used to have very wide jaw line. But today, we consume very easy to chew food which does not provide ample exercise to our jaws and as a result we have ended up with narrow jaw lines.

The interesting thing, however, is, earlier, people had wide jaw lines which accommodated all 32 teeth. But today, due to narrow jaw line, all the teeth are not accommodated and the wisdom takes a crooked position after pushing the last molar ahead.

After pushing the last molar, there is a gap in between the wisdom teeth and the last molar. This gap has to be filled in, just as you would fill a cavity or else food particles will get stuck in the gap and cause tooth decay.

When the wisdom tooth becomes infected or starts rotting, it will start hurting. Remember, if you wisdom tooth hurts, it’s time you need to visit the dentist.

Why Does It Hurt?

You get your wisdom teeth in the same way toddlers get their milk teeth. This basically means your teeth erupt by piercing the gums. So when the teeth pierce your gums, you will feel a sharp pain.

How Do I Soothe the Pain?

If the pain is continuous and there is no relief, the only option is extraction. However, extracting the wisdom tooth does have some disadvantages. There is a nerve that connects to your jaw line. If the wisdom tooth is touching it then you may lose sensation in your jaw temporarily.

The sensation will return in six weeks but at times may take up to six months. In order to be fully prepared, make sure you take an dental X-ray. This will help your dentist know whether the teeth is touching the nerve and will help in determining whether you will lose the sensation or not.

If the dentist finds that the jaw muscles are also infected and that you are unable to open your mouth you will be prescribed antibiotics to bring down the pain.

Once the pain subsides, you will be able to open your mouth and the wisdom tooth can be extracted. So when you feel your wisdom teeth is causing problems, consult your dentist and get it resolved to avoid the pain.

You can get relief from the pain by using gels like Dologel. This gel is to be applied on the gums where the wisdom tooth is erupting. This will make your gums numb for sometime and the pain will reduce. Also try gargling with warm salt water to soothe the pain.

Eating frozen foods like ice creams are also a good option to get some relief.
